Translate app strings without breaking placeholders

Translate the words in your app, then check that the parts your app fills in stay intact.

What it does

  1. Choose an app string and the language you need.
  2. Translate the words while keeping the parts your app fills in unchanged.
  3. Check those parts automatically, then have a speaker review the wording.

One example from our test

An English app message translated into German. The %s stays unchanged so the app can insert a name.

How well it works

Across 1,000 string-and-language pairs and 3 runs, Pareto broke 0.00% of placeholders on the first try. GPT-6.1 Sol scored the same on this set: a tie. These checks measure whether the strings still work, not whether the translations read well.

GPT-6.1 Sol served by Azure through OpenRouter.

This synthetic set produced no broken placeholders for either model, leaving little room to distinguish them; a speaker still needs to review the translations.

What it costs

Pareto: $0.37 per 1,000 string-and-language pairs, from measured usage at published rates.

GPT-6.1 Sol, served by Azure through OpenRouter: $0.88 per 1,000 string-and-language pairs, from measured usage at published rates.

These costs include recorded discounts for reused input text. Your inputs may cost a different amount.

Quick answer and measured results

How do you translate app strings and keep their placeholders?

Send the source string, locale and glossary through a forced tool call. Compare placeholder tokens and keys locally, reject extra calls, then retry structural failures. Review the language separately before importing the result.

On our 1000 string-by-locale items, first-pass placeholder break rate is 0.0000 for Pareto vs 0.0000 for the baseline: tie, across 3 repeats each. A floor effect limits what this structural test can distinguish; it does not measure translation quality.

Verdicts are computed from paired item resampling and the run ranges. Ties and losses stay in the record.

When not to use Pareto: use a translation memory for approved repeated strings. Legal text, language quality and right-to-left layout need human review; these structural checks do not establish any of them.

Tools and recipe

Tools that do this

Each of these talks to Pareto with a base URL, an API key and the model string pareto. Pick the one you already use.

How do you run the translation and check it?

Unlike batch code migrations, this recipe checks localized string structure, not source-code behavior. Labels set by the generator, spot-checked by us: that means agent inspection, not bilingual human review. The original synthetic English strings use CC0; SOURCE.md records the templates and limitations.

  1. Get an approved key

Choose a plan below. A person approves new accounts. Set UNBIASED_API_KEY in your shell, never in chat or a source file.

  2. Download the frozen files

Save the dataset, runner, recipe, checker and eval configuration from the download list into a new empty folder. Install Python and use a project virtual environment. The generation and scoring paths use only the standard library; planning also needs tiktoken==0.14.0.

  3. Start with a limited run

Run python3 -I run_eval.py --generate --arms pareto --split test --limit 10. Confirm the token budget before removing the limit. The named tool is forced, but the client still rejects multiple calls.

  4. Verify the local checker

Unset keys, then run python3 -I run_eval.py --rescore RUN on the generated directory. A dropped placeholder or wrong key must score a break. A repaired result does not erase its first-pass failure. Inspect the per-item scores and have a speaker review the translation before importing it.

The file contains simple controls, placeholder styles, flat ICU cardinal plurals, markup and unchanged glossary names. Every English string is tested in German, Japanese, Polish, Arabic and Brazilian Portuguese. Locale rows report break rates; the headline pools all locales. The ICU checker supports this flat subset only, not nested MessageFormat. Secondary validity rates include non-applicable controls. No claim about linguistic accuracy follows from a structural pass.

One model string, several models behind it

Pareto is Unbiased’s blended AI model: it selects frontier and open models for each request and blends their outputs into one answer.

How a Pareto answer gets made →
An illustration, not a wiring diagram. The blend includes frontier and open models, and its composition can change.

What does this string check cost?

Both costs use each arm's measured tokens, including any structural repair call, at the published prices. Structural success does not establish translation quality.

Measured token cost
$0.37 vs $0.88
Pareto vs GPT-6.1 Sol per 1,000 records at published rates
One Pareto run
0.72%
of a Personal week; 358,272 tokens; 50.00 minutes at 20 requests a minute

Token costs include measured cache reads; output tokens already include reasoning. The run time is a request-rate floor, not measured latency. One record is one string and locale; retries can add a request. Plan selection does not itself authorize production use. Confirm commercial or production use in a separate written agreement with Unbiased before moving live traffic.

Questions about this recipe

What counts as a broken placeholder?

A missing or changed placeholder token, invalid response or wrong key counts as a break. For flat ICU messages, a malformed count expression or missing number marker also counts. Zero-placeholder controls stay in the denominator. Plural-category completeness is a separate check.

Does a passing structure check mean the translation is accurate?

No. The checker inspects syntax and fixed glossary terms, not meaning, tone or suitability. A speaker must review important text. Legal strings need specialist review. Right-to-left rendering is outside this test.

How do you handle plural categories?

The fixture records the categories reported by Intl.PluralRules for each locale. The model receives those categories with the English ICU string. The checker requires each category without duplicate clauses and keeps the variable name unchanged.

What happens after a failure?

The recipe sends the rejected arguments and checker feedback for a single repair attempt. It keeps the first and final arguments in the raw record, so an eventual repair cannot hide an initial failure. Transport retries are recorded separately.

Who labeled the dataset?

Labels set by the generator, spot-checked by us. Structural labels are fixed before the English text is rendered; the authoring agent inspected them. Bilingual human spot-checks remain pending. This is an original synthetic set, not a public translation benchmark.

Can I send a whole translation file?

The scored recipe sends each string and locale separately, retaining the original key. Flatten a nested file locally and verify the complete key set before importing it. Whole-file context and nested ICU messages were not tested here.

What happens when I hit the weekly allowance?

Requests over your plan’s limits return an HTTP 429 error. Personal includes 50M tokens a week and 20 requests per minute. Personal Max raises that to 600M a week and 60 requests per minute for $100/month. Team uses prepaid pay-as-you-go credits with no weekly token cap.

Do I choose between models?

No. You send every request to one model string, pareto. Pareto selects frontier and open models for each request and blends their outputs into one answer.

Is my code kept?

Personal and Personal Max are not our zero data retention tier: prompts and responses may be kept up to 30 days, as section 5(c) of the Terms explains. For work that must not be kept, ask about the Zero Data Retention API on the Private AI page.
