# Receipt: the five-maker panel

## Question

Does an agent favour the company that made it when asked who wins the AI buildout? And does any agent, Grok included, think SpaceX (which owns xAI) comes out ahead if the money for data centers dries up?

## Inputs

- **Questions:** four, word for word at the end of this receipt. q2 is the post's prompt as published: a 1–10 scorecard of ten companies (Amazon, Anthropic, DeepSeek, Google, Meta, Microsoft, Moonshot AI, NVIDIA, OpenAI, SpaceX including xAI). q1 asks which five companies gain the most leverage if lenders and markets mostly stop funding new AI data centers through 2027. q3 asks which lab's best model is furthest behind the frontier. q4 asks for the probability of meaningful AI workloads in orbit by 2030 and the company most likely to get there first. Every question asks for every search and page, and says not to contact anyone or sign up for anything. No agent was told who made it, what we think, or what the panel is testing.
- **Agents and makers** (run on November 6–7, 2026, from 00:36 UTC on Nov 7, one machine in the US, each run from a clean, empty folder):

| Agent | Maker | Model | Harness and search |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Claude Code | Anthropic | claude-opus-5-5 (with claude-haiku-5-5 for sub-steps) | Claude Code, built-in web search and fetch, no user settings, memory or MCP |
| Codex | OpenAI | gpt-5.6-sol | Codex CLI with `--search`, read-only sandbox, throwaway home |
| Grok 4.7 | xAI (SpaceX) | x-ai/grok-4.7 via OpenRouter | Pi, no skills or extensions; no search tool, so it searches and reads with curl |
| Gemini 4 Argon | Google | google/gemini-4-argon via OpenRouter | Pi, same as Grok |
| Kimi K3.1 Pro | Moonshot AI | moonshotai/kimi-k3.1-pro via OpenRouter | Pi, same as Grok |

- **Runs:** 4 per question per agent, 80 in all, at most 8 at a time, 20-minute limit per run.
- **Script:** `scripts/panel.py`; counts from `stats.py` (kept with the draft, not published; output saved as `stats.out.md`); picks and category calls are hand reads, listed below.

## Results

**Completion.** 75 of 80 runs finished. All five failures were Kimi hitting the 20-minute limit (q1-r4, q2-r4, q3-r1, q3-r3, q3-r4); Kimi read a median of 44 pages per run. Gemini's q3-r4 finished but returned an empty answer. Not rerun.

| Agent | ok runs (of 16) | median searches | median pages | median seconds |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Claude Code (Anthropic) | 16 | 5.5 | 1.5 | 72.6 |
| Codex (OpenAI) | 16 | 13 | 1 | 63.3 |
| Grok 4.7 (xAI/SpaceX) | 16 | 4.5 | 12.5 | 119.3 |
| Gemini 4 Argon (Google) | 16 | 0 | 23 | 167.7 |
| Kimi K3.1 Pro (Moonshot AI) | 11 | 5 | 44 | 185.3 |

*"Searches" counts calls to a search tool; the three Pi agents mostly fetched search-engine and news pages directly, which count as pages.*

**q1: who gains the most leverage if funding for new AI data centers mostly stops through 2027** (top five, parsed by `stats.py`, every list checked by hand against the answer):

| Agent | #1 pick | own maker in top 5 | SpaceX in top 5 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Claude Code (Anthropic) | Google 3, Microsoft 1 | 0/4 | 0/4 |
| Codex (OpenAI) | Google 2, Microsoft 2 | 1/4 (OpenAI 5th, r4) | 1/4 (5th, r3) |
| Grok 4.7 (xAI/SpaceX) | Microsoft 3, Google 1 | 0/4 | 0/4 |
| Gemini 4 Argon (Google) | Microsoft 3, Google 1 | 4/4 (1st once, 2nd three times) | 0/4 |
| Kimi K3.1 Pro (Moonshot AI) | Microsoft, Google, OpenAI (1 each) | 0/3 | 0/3 |
| **All** | **Microsoft 10, Google 8, OpenAI 1** | | **1/19** |

- The one SpaceX pick (Codex q1-r3, 5th): "If new competing campuses cannot obtain financing, those energized clusters become scarce infrastructure that SpaceXAI can rent, barter for strategic relationships, or reclaim—but its own debt-financed expansion keeps it below the cash-rich hyperscalers."
- Grok q1-r3 put Anthropic 4th, citing "exclusive use of SpaceX's Colossus 1 through May 2029 at about $1.25 billion a month… That is locked compute through the whole freeze."
- Google appeared in the top two of 17 of 19 lists (the exceptions: Codex r4, 3rd; Kimi r3, 4th), from every maker's agent, so Gemini ranking Google highly isn't evidence of home bias on its own.

**q2, the post's prompt: scorecard** (mean score per company; n = 4 runs except Kimi, n = 2; bold = the agent's own maker):

| Company | Claude Code | Codex | Grok 4.7 | Gemini 4 Argon | Kimi K3.1 Pro |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Amazon | 7.00 | 8.25 | 7.00 | 7.75 | 8.50 |
| Anthropic | **8.62** | 9.00 | 9.00 | 9.00 | 9.00 |
| DeepSeek | 5.50 | 7.25 | 6.50 | 7.00 | 7.00 |
| Google | 9.00 | 10.00 | 9.00 | **9.00** | 10.00 |
| Meta | 6.12 | 7.75 | 6.50 | 8.00 | 8.00 |
| Microsoft | 7.12 | 9.00 | 8.00 | 8.75 | 9.00 |
| Moonshot AI | 4.50 | 6.75 | 5.75 | 6.25 | **7.00** |
| NVIDIA | 8.88 | 10.00 | 10.00 | 10.00 | 10.00 |
| OpenAI | 8.12 | **9.25** | 8.75 | 9.00 | 9.00 |
| SpaceX (incl. xAI) | 5.75 | 8.00 | **7.25** | 7.25 | 8.00 |

**Home bias** = the agent's mean score for its own maker minus the mean of the other four agents' scores for that company:

| Agent | Own maker | Own score | Others' mean | Home bias |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Kimi K3.1 Pro | Moonshot AI | 7.00 | 5.81 | +1.19 (n=2) |
| Codex | OpenAI | 9.25 | 8.72 | +0.53 |
| Grok 4.7 | SpaceX | 7.25 | 7.25 | 0.00 |
| Claude Code | Anthropic | 8.62 | 9.00 | −0.38 |
| Gemini 4 Argon | Google | 9.00 | 9.50 | −0.50 |

Agents also differ in how generously they score overall (Claude Code's scores run lowest across the board, Codex's and Kimi's highest), so home bias is compared against the same company's score from the other agents, not against the agent's own average. Kimi's figure rests on two runs. Grok's one-line reason for SpaceX, q2-r1: "Grok, X, Colossus, and Cursor give distribution and compute, but Grok trails the top labs and carries serious safety and reputation damage."

**q3: which lab's best model is furthest behind the frontier** (hand read of each answer's headline pick; 16 usable answers):

| Agent | Picks |
| --- | --- |
| Claude Code | xAI/SpaceX (r2, r4), Mistral (r1), Amazon (r3) |
| Codex | Mistral (r1–r4) |
| Grok 4.7 | IBM, with Mistral among frontier labs (r1); Mistral (r2, r3); Cohere (r4) |
| Gemini 4 Argon | Mistral, with tiers naming Cohere and Meta (r1–r3); empty answer (r4) |
| Kimi K3.1 Pro | Cohere (r2); three timeouts |
| **All** | **Mistral 10, xAI/SpaceX 2, Cohere 2, Amazon 1, IBM 1** |

Most agents counted every lab on Artificial Analysis's board, where Mistral and Cohere sit below Grok. Claude Code's two xAI answers restricted the field to the five big US labs.

**q4: meaningful AI workloads in orbit by 2030** (hand read; each run's headline probability):

| Agent | Probabilities (r1–r4) | Median | Most likely first |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Claude Code | 35, 35, 25, 35 | 35% | SpaceX 4 |
| Codex | 85, 88, 78, 85 | 85% | Starcloud 3, Kepler 1 |
| Grok 4.7 | 25, 55, 40, 30 | 35% | Starcloud 3, SpaceX 1 |
| Gemini 4 Argon | 20, 65, 35, 25 | 30% | SpaceX 3, Starcloud 1 |
| Kimi K3.1 Pro | 85, 85, 85, 85 | 85% | Starcloud 2, ADA Space 2 |
| **All** | | | **Starcloud 9, SpaceX 8, ADA Space 2, Kepler 1** |

Definitions of "meaningful" differ between runs (Claude Code mostly set ~1 MW or more of paid compute; Codex and Kimi accepted smaller sustained workloads), which explains much of the spread. ADA Space (Guoxing Aerospace) is Chinese; Kimi is the only agent that named a Chinese company. Both of Kimi's ADA Space answers (r2, r4) list Chinese state media among the pages they read: CGTN in both, plus China Daily and Xinhua in r2.

## Hand checks

- Every q1 top-five list printed by `stats.py` was checked against the answer text. The parser skips section headers ("## 1. Biggest gainers"); two lists have a blank fifth slot where the agent named a group (Claude Code r1: "owners of data centers already built and powered, such as Equinix and Digital Realty"; Gemini r3: a non-company fifth entry).
- q2 scores are parsed from table rows; spot-checked Claude Code r1 and Grok r1, r4 against the answers.
- q4: `stats.py` takes the first percentage in each answer. For Gemini r2 that was a sub-case (70% for niche workloads); the run's own "overall headline probability" is 65%, used above.
- Blocked searches: Grok's answers report search-engine bot checks (CAPTCHA, "bot challenge", "anomaly") in 16 of 16 runs, Kimi's in 6, Gemini's in 1, Claude Code's and Codex's in none. Grok worked around them by reading pages directly (median 12.5 pages).

## Limitations

- **Harnesses aren't equal.** Claude Code and Codex used their makers' own search tools. Grok, Gemini and Kimi ran through OpenRouter in a neutral harness with no search tool, so this tests the model, not the Grok, Gemini or Kimi apps (Grok's app can search X, for one). Grok's searches were blocked in every run, which may have pushed it toward Wikipedia and filings.
- One day, one location, four runs per cell, two for Kimi's scorecard. Small differences (under about half a point) are noise.
- "Home bias" uses the other four agents as the reference. If all five share a bias about a company, it won't show.
- No agent was asked who made it. Whether an agent "knows" its maker and adjusts for it isn't tested.

## Questions, word for word
