OpenRouter vs Pareto: two answers to different questions
Full disclosure in the first sentence: Pareto is ours. This page earns its keep by being precise about where OpenRouter is the right choice and what a blended model actually changes.
OpenRouter is an aggregator: you choose among 400+ models at list prices plus a 5.5% credit fee. Pareto is a blended model: it runs several LLMs on every request, synthesizes one answer, and bills at cost. Choose OpenRouter for breadth and control of model choice; choose Pareto to stop doing model choice at all.
The structural difference
OpenRouter gives you the market: four hundred plus models, one API, list prices passed through, 5.5% on credits. Every request runs on exactly the model you named. Pareto inverts the control: one endpoint, and inside every request several LLMs run with the result synthesized into a single answer, billed at cost. You never name a model; that is the product.
This is not a feature difference, it is a division of labor. The aggregator assumes model selection is your job and makes it convenient. The blended model assumes selection is a per-request optimization problem and takes it.
The numbers we can put next to each other
Cost basis: list prices plus 5.5% versus at cost. On our metered benchmark dashboard task, Pareto billed $0.0196 where Opus 4.8 billed $0.0724 and Fable 5 billed $0.1462, same prompt, same day; the extraction task ran $0.0018 against $0.0093 and $0.0148. Quality receipts are on the model card: seven public benchmarks against Opus 4.8, same harness, both sides published.
Latency, both directions, honestly: the gateway hop itself measured +68ms median. Pareto adds routing reasoning that can run up to 3x slower on the hardest reasoning tasks, and +0 on agentic work. If worst-case latency on hard tasks is your constraint, that line matters more than any fee.

Who should pick which

Pick Pareto if the bill is the problem and selection is a chore you keep re-doing every time the ladder reprices. The market moved three times at the flagship tier in nine months; a catalog hands you that homework, a blended model absorbs it. $100 of credits is enough to run the comparison on your own traffic, which beats believing either vendor.

Is Pareto an OpenRouter alternative?
For the integration problem, yes: both are one OpenAI-compatible endpoint replacing many. For the selection problem they are opposites: OpenRouter maximizes your choice; Pareto removes the choosing.
Can I verify Pareto's claims?

What is the catch with Pareto?
Two honest ones: routing reasoning can run up to 3x slower on the hardest reasoning tasks (agentic work measured +0), and you give up naming the model, which some workflows genuinely need.
